Job Description

This position is critical to ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the detainee population, addressing a wide range of medical needs, and maintaining a secure and effective correctional healthcare environment.

 

Work Schedule: 7am-3pm, 3pm -11pm or 11pm -7:30am 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial and ongoing health assessments of inmates.
  • Provide nursing care for various medical conditions, including chronic illnesses, acute illnesses, and injuries.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed.
  • Perform routine medical procedures (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, wound care, etc.).
  • Monitor inmate health, and report any significant changes to the appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Administer medications according to established protocols.
  • Document medication administration and any side effects or issues with medications.
  • Provide education on medication use and potential side effects to inmates.
  • Provide emergency nursing care, including first aid and CPR, as needed.
  • Respond to urgent medical situations within the facility.
  • Stabilize inmates in the event of medical emergencies and transport them to external healthcare facilities, if required.
  • Provide health education on a variety of topics, including disease prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, and chronic disease management.
  • Advise inmates on managing medications and treatment regimens for both short-term and long-term conditions.
  • Work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, mental health professionals, and other healthcare team members.
  • Ensure accurate and detailed documentation of inmate health records, including assessments, treatments, and care plans.
  • Maintain confidentiality of inmate health information in accordance with HIPAA regulations and correctional facility policies.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols to prevent the spread of diseases within the facility.
  • Implement safety measures related to both the staff and inmate populations (e.g., infection prevention, use of protective equipment).
  • Provide care for inmates with special medical needs, such as substance withdrawal, mental health issues, or infectious diseases (e.g., HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis).
  • Administer care for those undergoing detoxification or other specialized treatment.
  • Work closely with correctional officers and other security personnel to maintain a safe environment for both inmates and staff.
  • Follow security protocols when providing care to ensure the safety and security of the facility.
  • Recognize and address the mental health needs of inmates, often in collaboration with mental health professionals.
  • Understand the unique challenges that incarcerated individuals face, including substance abuse and trauma, and offer appropriate support or referrals.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the District of Columbia.
  • At least two years of clinical experience
  • Prior nursing experience in correctional healthcare or a similar environment is preferred.
  • Up to date immunizations.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills.
  • Knowledge of correctional healthcare procedures.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in potentially high-stress environments.
  • Strong communication skills, both with patients and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in sensitive situations.
  • Correctional facilities can be high-stress and potentially dangerous environments, so the ability to work with individuals who may have mental health issues, substance abuse problems, and a history of criminal behavior is essential.
  • Security measures will be in place, and you will work alongside correctional officers to ensure the safety of both inmates and healthcare staff.
  • Adherence to DC DOC policies, as well as federal and state laws and regulations.
