Job Description

A Registered Nurse (RN) working for the Department of Corrections (DOC) holds a crucial role in ensuring that incarcerated individuals receive quality healthcare services while maintaining the safety and security of the correctional facility.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive nursing assessments, including physical exams and health history reviews. Evaluate the health status of inmates and monitor ongoing conditions.
  • Administer prescribed medications, monitor side effects, and ensure accurate documentation of drug administration. This includes controlled substances as well as over-the-counter medications.
  • Provide treatments and procedures such as wound care, IV therapy, and other nursing interventions as prescribed by the medical team.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and triage incoming cases, ensuring urgent medical attention for conditions like injuries, medical distress, and mental health crises.
  • Monitor and manage chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and asthma, making sure inmates adhere to treatment plans and attend necessary follow-up appointments.
  • Work alongside physicians, mental health professionals, and other healthcare workers to ensure a holistic approach to inmate care. This may involve creating care plans for inmates with chronic or complex health conditions.
  • Participate in rounds and case reviews to discuss patient care needs and treatment plans. This collaborative effort ensures continuity and adjustments to care plans.
  • Make referrals to specialists or other medical providers as needed, coordinating transport and managing health information between departments and external facilities.
  • Oversee the work of other nursing staff (Licensed Practical Nurses, Nurse Aides, etc.), ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and standards of care.
  • Maintain detailed, confidential medical records for each inmate, documenting assessments, treatments, medication administration, and outcomes. Use electronic health record (EHR) systems for data entry.
  • Address mental health crises, suicidal tendencies, or violent outbreaks. RNs are expected to provide initial interventions, manage stabilization, and consult with psychologists or psychiatrists when necessary.
  • Keep track of medical supplies, medications, and equipment, ensuring proper storage, handling, and regular stocktaking to prevent shortages.

 

Shift: Monday - Friday 7a-3p (must have availability to work at least two weekends a month)

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid and active RN license in the District of Columbia.
  • A nursing degree from an accredited school (Associate Degree in Nursing or higher).
  • Updated immunizations and CPR (Hep B, Flu, MMR, PPD/Chest X-Ray, T-Dap, Varicella, Covid)
  • At least one year of clinical experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in areas such as emergency care, medical-surgical nursing, or community health.
  • Previous experience working in a correctional, law enforcement, or other secure setting is highly preferred. Knowledge of the unique healthcare needs of incarcerated populations is a plus.
  • Familiarity with managing inmates with mental health conditions, including substance abuse disorders and psychiatric disorders, is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in patient assessment, wound care, medication administration, emergency response, and the management of chronic diseases.
  • Effective communication with inmates, fellow healthcare providers, security personnel, and administrative staff. Ability to provide patient education in a clear, concise manner.
  • Ability to assess complex situations, make critical decisions, and provide quality care in stressful and sometimes unpredictable environments.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and a high degree of accuracy in documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to handle physical demands of the job, such as standing for extended periods, assisting with patient movement, and responding to emergencies. Mental resilience to work in a high-stress, sometimes volatile environment.
