Job Description

We are hiring a Criminal Defense Attorney to join the Virginia legal team. This role will primarily serve clients in Fredericksburg, North Richmond, Stafford, Spotsylvania, and Culpeper. The ideal candidate is a seasoned litigator with a strong background in criminal defense, capable of managing a full caseload independently from intake to resolution.

 

Responsibilities

  • Represent clients in misdemeanor and felony criminal defense matters throughout Virginia state courts
  • Manage cases from initial client intake through investigation, plea negotiations, motions, trial, and sentencing
  • Regularly appear in court for arraignments, hearings, motion practice, and trials
  • Prepare and file legal motions, discovery requests, and other court documents
  • Conduct legal research and stay up-to-date on emerging trends and legislative changes in Virginia criminal law
  • Provide clear and consistent communication and guidance to clients throughout the legal process
  • Supervise and collaborate with junior associates, legal assistants, and paralegals
  • Attend firm trainings, team meetings, and contribute to firm development initiatives
  • Build and maintain relationships within the legal community and local bar associations

Job Requirements

Qualifications 

 

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia (in good standing)
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on criminal defense experience (misdemeanors, felonies, DUIs, drug offenses, violent crimes, etc.)
  • Strong courtroom presence and trial litigation skills
  • Ability to handle a fast-paced caseload independently while meeting deadlines
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills
  • Professionalism, empathy, and a client-first approach
  • Experience with appellate work and/or post-conviction relief (PCR) cases
  • Fluency in Spanish (or high proficiency) to serve a broader client base, preferred
  • Prior experience clerking for a judge or in a public defender’s office or prosecution
  • Familiarity with legal practice management systems (e.g., Clio, MyCase)
