Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the implementation, development, and assessment of infection control practices for both the facility and staff, ensuring ongoing effectiveness.
  • Oversee the facility’s wound care program, assist nursing staff with wound care procedures, and provide education on proper wound assessment, logging, and communication.
  • Align with and support the mission, philosophy, and objectives of the nursing department to ensure quality care for all residents.
  • Stay informed on and adhere to applicable Medicare, managed care, and state Medicaid regulations, reimbursement systems, and methodologies.
  • Assess the educational needs of clinical staff, develop relevant training based on facility assessments, quality audits, and applicable laws, ensuring staff competency to care for increasingly complex residents.
  • Provide clinical expertise to support and facilitate the nursing process in resident care and interventions.
  • Conduct thorough orientation for all facility employees regarding departmental practices and relevant county policies.
  • Provide hands-on assistance with nursing duties, including medication administration, admissions, discharges, and transfers, as needed.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain clinical policies that align with nursing practice standards and comply with federal and state regulations.
  • Communicate and ensure effective implementation of policies and procedures among nursing staff.
  • Actively participate in state and federal nursing home surveys, assist in developing and executing corrective action plans for any identified deficiencies.
  • Play a key role in assessing the nursing needs of prospective residents and ensuring proper placement.
  • Oversee nursing schedules to ensure they meet resident needs while adhering to regulatory and budgetary guidelines.
  • Direct investigations of any alleged resident abuse, neglect, or misappropriation, and submit findings to the state when necessary.
  • Participate in counseling or educational sessions for residents, family members, or staff.
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring sufficient nursing staff to ensure the facility's needs are met.
  • Be available to work on-call.
  • Assume an administrative role, ensuring smooth facility operations.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, risk management efforts, and compliance with all relevant guidelines.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

 

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • Current, valid DC nursing license (RN) 
  • At least 3–5 years of experience in a clinical leadership or supervisory role, preferably in a long-term care setting or skilled nursing facility.
  • In-depth understanding of infection control practices, wound care, Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Proven experience as a Director of Nursing, with an understanding of DC-specific regulatory requirements.
  • In-depth knowledge of HUD laws and compliance standards for senior living facilities.
  • Familiarity with Employee Value Proposition (EVP) strategies to attract and retain talent.
  • Strong network and connections within the DON community in the Washington, DC area.
